Choma Chat

"I missed the deadline for January, then February, might miss this one too, if I don't get a move on.  I do however, want to re-write for the records the following:

By the time this is read we will be into the New Year.   May it be a better one than last year, eg:

The Rubbish

The reckless behaviour of our taxi drivers

The see-sawing of the Kwacha

Power cuts - but pat on the back for our Choma chaps who do their best to restore our local supply quickly

Crop producer prices

Lack of rain.

May all these things be upgraded in 2007

Well, the last has been upgraded in most localities, late the rains may have been, but thankfully most dams are full, cattle are fat, sheep dying of wireworm and crops mainly good. Even more importantly it seems that some of the residents in the Sinazongwe area have been unable on occasions to come up for air due to the rivers and streams and dongas being impassable.   This is great news!  Water into the Lake may avert what appeared to be a crisis in the making with such critically low levels of water about to affect our power source.

Congratulations and Many thanks to Zamtel ... the Choma outlying farms now have their phones upgraded and what is even more exciting is that these phones have an option attached for joining up to the world wide web. And it works! There is always the downside of course ... no excuse now for not getting the hayfield mown and baled because it might rain tomorrow - oh no, 'cos the Choma weather website will tell us exactly when to expect rain. Can't blame the travel agent anymore for booking us on the most expensive flight out ... oh no 'cos the airline websites tell us all.   No excuse for being overdrawn at the Bank, 'cos oops, our online banking is there to halt us in our tracks...

What is even more scary and absolutely no excuse for not communicating is that when ZESCO goes OFFline, our new phone system stays ONline albeit the computer screen is the only light in the house!!!!!  Quite wondrous.

Cricket is in the news, not only with the World Cup coming up shortly, but have you noticed all the earth moving that has taken place behind the Sports Club?   The new cricket pitch is really happening, the ground levelled, and fence going up.  There is still a lot of work to do but Cricket nets practice every Wednesday afternoon and all welcome.

Chibila Camp, Itezhi Tezhi is fully booked for Easter, but there are plenty of spaces available for your very own long weekend. From 1st March fishing is again allowed on all our rivers and dams, so Book Now! Subs also due for the Itezhi Tezhi branch of the Wildlife Society. K50,000 single and K100,000 double/family. Contact Tony and Eva Middleton on 097 794-036.

DIARY 28 and 29 April -The Choma Polocrosse Club tournament.  Please come and support and enjoy.

Lastly, a word of thanks and appreciation to Felix who runs the plant nursery by the post office.   He

Diligently, throughout the year, plants and nurtures flowers in and around his patch and if you venture up the dirt road at the side of the Post Office towards Lusumpuku House, Eyes Right, and you will see the magnificent work he has done with rose bushes, flowers and shrubs.   He is not paid to do this by the Council, it is his own contribution to make Choma pretty. A quite remarkable effort.

Whilst on the subject of growing things, if anyone is interested in planting trees, Sue Brooks has quite a selection of indigenous and exotics. Do your bit for averting climate change. And whilst on that subject, i.e. RUBBISH (No 1 on the list above) is BIG business in Europe, and we have so much of it here, is there no-one out there with any great ideas for recycling Choma!

Over and Out........"
