Nakambala’s Lionesses – Stamping Out The Hiv/Aids Stigma!!
When World Aids Day was recognised towards the end of last year in
Maz, a group involved in the days activities that stood out for
their tremendous courage and dignity were the Nakambala Lionesses.
The Lionesses are people (28 to date) from around Mazabuka, who have
made it known that they are living positively with HIV/AIDS.
They are determined to improve the lives of fellow sufferers by
stamping out the stigma of the disease, persuading them to go for
VCT’s and taking anti retroviral drugs if needed. Most of them are
widows with families. However the few men that are involved are
trying hard to encourage more men to join them in their
determination to end the misconceptions about the disease. Zambia
Sugar’s MD Paul de Robillard commended the Lionesses for their
courage calling them “disciples for tomorrow” and pointing out that
they were playing a vital role in the community.
The Lionesses have started a fund raising campaign to help fellow
members in need of support. They plan to start a broiler project at
Nakambala Estate and on February 23 they will be holding a Zambian
Evening at the Staff Club at Nakambala to help fund the project.
Traditional Zambian food will be on sale and there will be various
activities throughout the evening. Tickets cost K10,000 and for
more information you can contact Zambia Sugar’s Medical Social
Welfare Officer, Mutandalike Choonga on 097480-784 or Trinity on 095
380-037.
