CHOMA CHAT

MB's KB's VSAT R-BGAN BROADBAND  KU-BAND, SKIPE, Voip, Easy Accelerator......that's been the Choma Chat these past weeks!   I've not let on until now, but I never did quite grasp at school the science involved in Alexander Bell's great invention (and come to think of it, does the latter even have any connection with all this technology) so, hardly surprising that my face is a bit blank during these discussions.   It is exciting though - the great World Wide Web is about to include Choma as well it seems.   Even better, there is more that one Company vying for our custom - for so long we have taken it for granted that the One Who Shall be Nameless was our sole communications provider and that with copious amounts of prodding pushing, shoving, cajoling, and plain nagging, we might be able to vaguely keep comms with the outside world.   However, it's a little scary to have so much modern technology suddenly being thrust into our midst and I'm just getting a teeny little bit nostalgic about the bad ole days!

Thanks to Tish Truscott for a wonderful Workshop of Floral art recently. Her arrangements were an eye-opener and very different to those of some years back, the emphasis is on informality these days (well at least watching her work, it appeared that way).

Dr Jain has just opened his new Clinic. It is very well appointed in Mochipapa Road, over the railway line opposite the Police Station, first left and it's the second property on the left. Lovely big shady carpark, two doctors, a very well equipped operating theatre, two x two bed wards and a well stocked pharmacy. The usual lab tests can be done and there is more equipment coming in including the machine that definitely tells you if you have malaria or not! Become a member and pay $50 quarterly which will allow you free consultation. For full details phone Dr Jain on 095 772-977 or Mrs Jain on 097 661-414.   Better still go and look around. Dr Jain welcomes all visitors to have a look-see and better now than when you ain't feeling too good.

CONGRATULATIONS to whoever is responsible for the upkeep of Livingstone Airport and it's surrounds.  Most of us here arrive or depart through Livingstone periodically throughout the year and I never cease to marvel at what a unique and beautiful Airport it is.   Cast your mind over all the airports you have ever visited and you will know what I mean.  Does any other airport in the world have such lovely trees in front of the main building or the very beautiful roses lining our route in and out. The very act of travelling is stressful and they are a gladsome sight.   A big thank you to all those who work so hard at keeping Livingstone, the "prettiest Airport in the World".

CHIBILA CAMP, Itezhi Tezhi.   I reviewed this wonderful getaway in the December 04 issue.  It was called Itezhi Tezhi Wildlife Camp then, but everything else is unchanged. Do not miss an opportunity to pack the rods and get down the Namwala Road, across the Kafue on the pontoon and into Camp.  Glorious views, good accommodation and facilities, only three hours from Choma. And it's cheap.  Remember it is a Members Only camp for the Wildlife and Environmental Conservation Society of Zambia members.  Membership forms are available at Camp to enable you to join and you will be doing your bit to further a good cause. Further details and bookings through Tony or Eva Middleton on 097 794-036 and   097 836-010 respectively.

SINAZONGWE SIGHTINGS It's always a nice drive to Sinazongwe down on the Lake but at this time of the year, more than ever. All the Combretum is out in flower and the road after the escarpment in the valley is lined with a mass of flame.   Also the trees down there are more advanced than ours up here and Spring has Sprung.  The Valley is truly a wonderful mix of colours. The bird life, too is interesting,, particularly on the ever increasing shoreline.  Different kinds of egrets, geese, kingfishers, herons, bee-eaters, rollers and there must have been a cormorant conference there the other day.   And what are the red-billed Hornbills picking up down there amongst the slowly rotting oxygen and other weed?  There are places to stay down there, reviews coming up shortly.
