Choma Chat

As I write, there has been no power in the Sibinyati area since Saturday! It's not the defrosting fridges and freezers and rotten tobacco in the barns which is the problem, we're far too stoic for that, it's having no water which is the killer.  Thank goodness for good ole standpipes, as I queued with the farm this morning I thought over a remark made by one of our water engineers from way back - "the next war will be fought over water".   I wonder when that will be........or did I not hear correctly, maybe he said oil!

The Sports Club had it's first St Valentine's Dance since the Seventies on the 12th and a huge success it was.  Organized by, catered for and choreographed by Sam and Fiona Marx, congratulations to them both for a very special evening.  Cecile and Sam provided music and entertainment.

St Mulumba School for the Handicapped has just celebrated it's twentieth anniversary.   The Roman Catholic clergy was well represented and a special Mass was held before the festivities began.   Sister Philippa, probably the

person most singly responsible for the great success the School has been and is, visited from Ireland especially to join in the festivities.   For those who are unaware in the district of it's being, it is a special school for the deaf and dumb, blind and handicapped.   Throughout the year, funds are in short supply to keep the children equipped and well fed and donations, either monetary or surplus fruit, vegetables, foodstuffs, are most welcome.  A very well worth while project with some wonderful staff who themselves have overcome their own handicaps to help others. Sister Patricia issued a plea for donations recently, please do respond, every little helps to make life a little easier for those in our community not  blessed with those things most of us take for granted.  Above all, the School aims to send the children out with an education which will allow them to get jobs and be self sufficient.

Any complaints welcome please to the Boma regarding the "Bus Stop" outside the Post Office.   It is absolutely NOT a good place for coaches etc to pull in and is causing a dangerous hazard to the general public who use the

area to go about their normal business.   Busses attract the street vendors  and other not so desirables in our community and the congestion is an accident waiting to happen. The council assure us that steps have been taken to move the Stop to another venue but to date this is not happening!!

It is hoped that the stock movement ban in force throughout most of the country at present due to Foot and Mouth found in some areas, will be lifted in time for Choma to hold it's Annual Polocrosse Tournament in May.  Watch for further updates in the March Chat.

No such excuses however, for the newly formed Cricket club.   We expect our chaps to continue the form they displayed at the end of last season!

Church Services are now being held twice monthly at Sam and Fiona Marxs' house, starting 9 on a Sunday morning.   For more details please contact Erin Wingfield on 097 769477   or Fiona Marx on 097 768415.  There will also be children's church during the normal service for those of you with children that are interested

According to those who have kept rainfall records in this area for some sixty or more years, this really is the Worst Year ever experienced, at least so far.  There is still a little time left for the heavens to make up the loss, but we're fast running out of time, even now it is too late for some crops, we can only hope all the dams will be filled before the dry season.
